Motorcycle driver dies in a major crash, his passenger was injured and had to be taken to the local hospital. According to the reports an 82nd Airborne Division Paratrooper was sadly killed during a crash with a vehicle as he was riding his motorcycle early Saturday night.
Twenty-Four year old, Private First Class, Jeremiah S. Holmes from Rancho Cucamonga, California, was a crewmember of the cannon crew. He was assigned to the Bravo Battery, 1st Battalion, 319th Field Artillery Regiment, and the 82nd Airborne Division.
Lt. Col. Jeffery Munn’s Statement About the Motorcycle Crash:
Private First Class Jeremiah Holmes was among the small group of Americans who volunteered to take up arms for our Nation in a time of war. He was well liked by his peers and respected throughout the organization. Just two weeks ago we celebrated his promotion to Private First Class in front of his fellow Paratroopers and he was thriving as a Loyalty Paratrooper. Jeremiah will forever remain a member of Loyalty; the entire organization feels this loss. We now turn our focus to his family and teammates in their mourning.
Pfc. Holmes joined the Army in April of 2016. He then went to Basic Combat Training and quickly Advanced Individual Training. In August 2016, Holmes was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division.
Holmes’ awards as well as his decorations include: National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and the Parachutist Badge. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal and the Army Good Conduct Medal.
The crash is still under investigation at this time by the Fayetteville Police Department
They are used for tactical advantage as they can be inserted into the battlefield from the air, thereby allowing them to be positioned in areas not accessible by land. They jump out of airplanes using their parachutes to land safely on the ground. It is one of the three types of “forced entry” strategic techniques for entering a theater of war; the other two are by land and sea. The ability of air assault to enter the battlefield from any location allows paratroopers to evade emplaced fortifications that exist to prevent an attack from a specific direction, and the possible use of paratroopers, forces an army to spread their defenses to protect other areas which would otherwise be safe by geographical virtue. Another common use for paratroopers is to establish an airhead for landing other units.
Argentina was the first country on the continent of South America to use Paratroopers. The first paratroopers were issued jump helmets similar to that used by the British at the time.
Paratroopers aren’t common where I am, but they seem to be a very noble profession.
