San Francisco Good Will Struggle With Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are a horrible little nuisances that can cause all kinds of issues. Recently they wreaked havoc on a Goodwill warehouse in the Bay Area.
The workers at the Goodwill say that they first saw the bed bugs in the San Francisco and Burlingame warehouses. Of course their customers were pretty upset about the findings.
Victor Matushenko’s Statement:
I feel a little shocked a little bit, ya know, they should be checking their stuff if they’re gonna be selling to the public.
The local exterminator said that the shocking part of the whole situation is that they don’t hear about this more often. You’re getting clothes from all kinds of places, why aren’t you getting more bug calls?
It didn’t surprise me because it’s so widespread in today’s industry. We find evidence of bed bugs in hotels, movie theaters, planes, trains, boats, everywhere, we do cruise ships, I did a library in one city.
A spokesman for the Goodwill says that the group has thrown away a lot of the donations, enough to fill a whole tractor-trailer actually. They will work to steam clean the rest of the hundreds of other items that they have and will still bring in an exterminator to finish cleaning the Burlingame warehouse. They will also bring in a pest sniffing dog for an inspection afterwards.
Just like a drug dog, they’re gonna identify where the issue is in facility and then it can be addressed locally without doing the whole facility, The dogs are very impressive, they can detect up to one bedbug egg.
The Goodwill says that this will cost the agency a pretty penny, around a hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Luckily they haven’t found bed bugs in any of their other stores. However, the exterminators say that they are going to inspect items such as: bedding, bedside tables, stuffed animals, toys, etc. just to be on the safe side. Also make sure to check the cracks and crevices of items because that is where the bed bugs like to hide.
Bed Bug Spray
Recently a forty-six year old man from San Jose has been sentenced six months in jail for selling a cockroach and bedbug pesticide that he claimed that would be safe to use inside of the homes.
Julio Pino Reyes is the forty-six year old man who sole the dangerous pesticide to the people. He re-bottled and then re-sold it to people, claiming the it could kill the bugs. The pesticide sadly ended up killing three people and two small children had to go to the hospital after they were exposed to it.
Bud Porter’s Statement:
Pesticides are poisons with a purpose, they should not be sold out of the back of a pickup truck.
Of course exposure to a pesticide can be pretty harmful. It can cause nausea, shaking, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, and confusion. Not a very fun time. Those symptoms could be life threatening to anyone.
According to reports the pesticide was sold at the flea markets as a powder form. It was also sold through Facebook and ads as well.
Hopefully everyone finds out about the lawsuit and immediately stops using this harmful product before it kills anymore humans or pets. Although, at this time there hasn’t been any reports of any animals harmed.
The Growing Problem of Bed Bug Infestation
Bed bugs have been a problem in the United States and throughout the world as long as recorded history. Although the 50’s saw a dramatic reduction in bed bug populations, the United States has joined one of the many countries experiencing a dramatic increase in bed bug populations. Bed bugs are now showing up everywhere including private homes, offices, and luxury hotels. In California the most reports of bed bug infestations are seen in the coastal cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego, but even non-coastal areas such as Orange County have seen an increase in bed bug infestations.
Public health agencies across the United States have seen overwhelming complaints of bed bugs in recent years. People of all ages and economic and social backgrounds experience painful bed bug bites on a daily basis. The new daily filed reports of bed bugs confirm the problem of bed bugs is a growing concern.
This increasing bed bug problem occurs in apartment buildings and hotel rooms around the world. People of all ages, and economic and social backgrounds and walks of life are subject to repeated bites all over their bodies from bed bugs bites. Adults aren’t the only age groups affected. Teenagers, the elderly, and even infants can be bitten, and often they may suffer serious infections and injuries resulting from these bites.
Hotel operators and apartment building managers have special obligations to their tenants and guests to inspect their property for bed bug infestations on a routine basis. If an infestation is found, it’s necessary for them to take the required steps to eliminate bed bugs from their property. Bed bug victims are entitled to receive compensation which includes medical costs, emotional distress, pain and suffering, and property damage.
What are Bed Bugs in San Francisco?
Bed bugs are insects that feed exclusively on blood. They are attracted to body heat and carbon dioxide from a person’s breath. After finding a host to feed on, they burrow under the skin to find a blood vessel large enough to draw blood from. The pressure in the blood vessel is usually sufficient to fill the bed bug up in order to satisfy their appetite within a few minutes.
The volume of bed bug infestation reports emphasize the current problem and needs to comprehensively address this issue. Fortunately, preliminary studies indicate there is no evidence that bed bugs spread viruses such as HIV, but more study is needed to confirm this finding. While the Center for Disease Control reports the HIV virus has been recovered from bed begs as early as one hour after they’ve fed on infected blood there is no further evidence that HIV can be transmitted this way.
