  • A Bicycle Accident During an Organized Event

Bicyclists take to the roads for many reasons, for basic transportation, as a form of exercise, or to participate in one of the many bicycling events staged every year. An organized event is no guarantee against a bicycle accident that a rider may face with a car, truck, bus, or other motor vehicle. Unfortunately, bicyclists are often the victims of motor vehicle accidents, particularly on busy and well-traveled thoroughfares.

When a motorist negligently strikes someone riding a bike, that bicyclist can make a claim against them for his or her damages, including medical bills, pain and suffering, disfigurement, lost wages, and other damages from the accident. Biking injuries are often severe when struck by a motorist, as bicycles offer no protection in a collision.

A well organized, planned annual event staged by a very experienced group offered no protection from a bicycle accident for these unlucky riders.

The annual bicycle ride

An automobile slammed into a group of bicyclists during a 40th annual ride along the New England coastline, killing two riders and injuring two others, the police report stated.

The crash occurred on a two-lane bridge about 8:30 a.m., just after the start of an annual coastline bicycle ride.

Police said two Massachusetts middle aged women were killed. Two other riders suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators said a 20-year-old motorist was driving southbound and crossed into the northbound lane, hitting the riders. The woman was treated at a hospital for minor injuries and released.

Authorities haven’t said whether the motorist will be charged. Local police said the investigation is ongoing and could take some time while witnesses are questioned.

Event organizers didn’t immediately return messages seeking comment. A section of the route was closed off while police investigated the crash but reopened a few hours later.

Other participants had to be routed around the bridge closure while police investigated.
