Boy Stays Positive After Losing Leg in Accident

Young  Boy Loses His Leg in a Trash Truck Accident but Stays Positive

Even though a young boy lost his leg due to an accident with a Trash Truck, young Luke stays positive. He says he’s looking forward to a bright future!

His family, The Acuna family, says that the last two years has been extremely difficult. The boys father, Anthony has not been able to return to work since he has been taking care of Luke full time. Anthony says that the settlement money is exactly what they need to get Luke the help that he needs.

The city council’s decision, Tuesday, to pass an $18.5 million settlement is an answered prayer for Luke and his family. Anthony says that “I’m just thankful that the city council took the initiative to make a wrong right. They are going to get a good citizen out of Luke.” Anthony went on to say that he and his wife just want a better future for Luke and that money will make a better future for him.

The money will go towards a retrofitted car for Luke as well as a home that will accommodate Luke’s wheelchair. They want fifth grader Luke to be self sufficient in life.

In November 2011, Luke was only nine years old when he was struck by the city trash truck. Luke was riding a skateboard along Meade Avenue when the truck hit him at the Kansas Street. He fell under the trash truck and was crushed by the undercarriage. Luke’s left leg was amputated and he suffered internal injures as well as broken bones.

Anthony states:

I think Luke should have died that day, but because he did not he’s going to he’s going to change the universe in ways we do not believe

Luke proved that against all odds with his intense rehabilitation that his will was stronger than his tiny body. Luke says that “It’s not the end of the world. They can better and will get better.”

Luke’s tragedy turns into inspiration due to his amazing outlook on life. While Luke’s progress may be slow, his story of him and his family learning to “make lemonade out of lemons” is truly inspirational. His family say that it was Luke who taught them who to be hopeful.

Luke may be young but he says that he has high hopes for his future. His next goal is to do a back flip in his wheelchair for ESPN, Watch out Nitro Circus!

The Acuna’s family lawyer alleged that the driver of the trash truck made a dangerous and illegal turn which caused the accident. This settlement will end all legal claims against the city and the trash truck driver.
