Big Rig Truck Crash
A big rig hauling two trailers of cement overturned on Highway 12 in the Delta late Monday morning, leaving one person with a minor injury and causing hundreds of vehicles to back up in the westbound direction as the wreckage was cleared.
The crash occurred about 11:30 a.m. as the single westbound lane of traffic was backing up from the Mokelumne River for an open drawbridge, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The big rig driver, traveling about 50 to 60 miles per hour when he came up on the traffic, realized he would not be able to stop in time so he turned his wheel hard, causing the half-filled trailers to jackknife and overturn onto the right shoulder, according to a report.
Truck Crash
The driver was able to walk away uninjured from the jumbled heap that was his truck. Later, as he watched large tow trucks work to upright the trailers, he declined the opportunity to comment on the accident.
Two other vehicles, a Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, were caught up in the crash and appeared to sustain extensive damage. Both were hauled away from the scene on flatbed tow trucks. The driver of the Ford suffered unspecified minor injuries, according to the CHP.
About 1:15 p.m., the CHP closed the westbound direction for about 15 minutes as a precaution while the trailers were being uprighted.
Considering the extensive damage to the vehicles involved, CHP Officer Nicholas Capadona said it was “remarkable” that only one person sustained a minor injury.
Fiery Truck Crash
A fiery crash on the 91 freeway in Anaheim late Friday left one man dead.
California Highway Patrol said a car slammed into the back of a big rig and burst into flames about 11:40 p.m.
The semi was stalled on the eastbound shoulder at the time, and witnesses said the driver of the car was weaving in and out of the emergency lane just before the crash.
CHP Sgt. Todd Kovaletz said two good Samaritans stopped to help and were able to get the flames out with a fire extinguisher and break the window to try to get the driver out.
One of the good Samaritans was Riverside resident Hunter De La Hoya, who was heading home after a day at Disneyland when he saw the car on fire.
Hunter De La Hoya’s Statement:
It was all in flames, and I saw this dude over there, he was trying the get the guy out, and we got a fire extinguisher from the truck driver. I got a screw driver from the driver of the truck right here, so I ran over and busted the window and tried to get him out, but he was stuck in there so we just had to wait for fire truck to get here.
The driver of the car died at the scene.
CHP continues to investigate the accident, but said rain was not a factor in the crash.

The caller told dispatchers that the semi lost control, swerved and overturned down a hill off the roadway.
The truck’s driver was reportedly trapped inside. No information on the driver’s condition was immediately available.
