DUI Driver Speeds and Kills Three People
A man was accused of drunk driving was in a horrific DUI accident. The crash killed three of the five passengers that were with the man. He was allegedly speeding and despite the requests from his friends, he refused to slow down before the collision happened.
The Deputy District Attorney, Mackenzie Harvey stated:
[His passengers] asked him to slow down. He declined, said it was his car and he would drive it as fast as he wanted
Twenty-five year old, William Cady appeared in a courtroom for the first time to face six charges which include 3 counts of gross vehicular manslaughter. The accident happened on January 10th and took place along the Interstate 805 at State Route 52, near the Clairemont Mesa.
William appeared in court with visible injuries which included two black eyes, several cuts, and he also wore a neck brace. He stayed quiet as the DA Harvey described the events surrounding the triple fatal crash.
According to the prosecutor, William and five of his friends were drinking at a friend’s house on a Friday night. They then headed to a bar in the Clairemont Mesa area. While at the bar, the group of men allegedly consumed a large amount of alcohol. They drank so much that their server even told them that they should not be driving.
The men left the bar and headed to a nearby grocery store. They purchased more alcohol then made their way to the second bar in the Clairemont Mesa where they were eventually kicked out for being too rowdy.
After William lost control of his Escalade, it veered off the road and careened up an embankment. The car then plowed into a cement pillar and rolled over several times, it finally came to a halt in the traffic lanes.
After that, CHP Officials say it was like a chain reaction-style collision that followed. A Acura came crashing into the SUV. Just moments later another vehicle slammed into the Acura, then it traveled down the embankment across both directions of traffic on the Eastbound SR-52, which eventually landed on the south side of the road. A third vehicle was also involved in the collisions.
Both CHP officials said that the five passengers of William’s Escalade were not wearing their seat-belts. Four of the six men were ejected from the vehicle. Taylor Bernardski-29 and Shon Gilliam-23 died at the scene of the accident. Jeffrey Becker-35, was wearing his seat-belt was also pronounced dead at the site of the DUI Crash.
According to William’s Lawyer:
He’s absolutely devastated. The people that were killed were his friends, There are not going to be any winners or losers in this case – no matter how it shakes out.
William is pretty banged and beat up. He does not have a criminal history and for now, the suspected drunk driving crash remains under investigation.
