After a fatal crash two lanes of the Northbound Harbor Freeway were shut down. The man was hit by a motorist which police suspect was a felony hit-and-run.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the accident happened just south of the Vernon Avenue in the Vermont Square section of Central Los Angeles around 11:15 that night.
The preliminary CHP accident report stated that a 53 year old Compton man had just reached the Vernon Avenue offramp on his 1979 Honda Motorcycle when he inexplicably veered left, striking a concrete curb, which caused him to fly off of the bike.
After that several vehicles hit the man and one of the drivers even lost control of his vehicle and hit a guardrail. The motorist was a 49 year old man from Hawthorne and was driving a Lexus RS300, then fled the scene but CHP found him and arrested him on suspicion of felony hit and run. There was no immediate word stating the condition of the other drivers who struck the motorcyclist.
After being hit several times, the man’s body had ended up on the shoulder of the Vernon Avenue offramp. According to CHP he died at the scene. The man’s name is being withheld due to family notification.
The California Highway Patrol’s accident investigation shut down the number 3 and 4 lanes and the Vernon Avenue offramp as well as declaring a SigAlert. Around 2:18 the next morning the SigAlert was cancelled and the lanes were cleared. The crash remains under investigation by the CHP.
