Police supervisor, Jane Kim said that pedestrian deaths and injuries are a growing problem in the city.
Kim’s statement about the Crossing Accident
There are no words to express the deep sadness and grief felt for the death of young San Francisco resident, Sophia Liu, our second pedestrian death in the Tenderloin in the month of December and the 20th pedestrian fatality in San Francisco, the highest in 6 years.
The driver was a “non-taxi, for-pay driver.” Since this accident, it has raised some questions in regards to the driver training and selection process for the increasing number of ride share drivers on the city streets. Even though the drivers fulfill an important need for flexible, on-demand transportation in San Francisco, police are examining the baseline of safety oversight for the services.
Earlier that Tuesday a eighty-six year old pedestrian was struck and killed in San Francisco’s Crocker-Amazon neighborhood. The victim was later identified as Zhen Guang Ng.
Around three-thirty that evening police officers had responded to reports of the a crash at the Rolph and Naples streets. They found a man suffering from multiple injuries. He was quickly transported to the San Francisco General Hospital where he then died.
