Early Thursday Morning there were a few accidents on eastbound 210 Freeway in Pasadena. The accidents included two deaths and four motorist’s injured.
Oscar Eduardo Avila Reyes who was 33 died that morning as well as a 58 year old man from Arroyo whose name will not be released until his family is notified. The crashes cased a lane on the freeway to be closes until late that evening as well as a section of The Metro Gold Line to be briefly closed.
The causes of both of these tragedies are unknown. It was raining so that could have been a factor but everything is still being investigated. Thursday mornings rain took a toll on the roads throughout Los Angeles County. Police said that there were 175 crashes reported between midnight and 10 a.m. Thursday.
After losing control of his tractor and trailier, Reyes died around 2:30 a.m. near Madre Street. Police say that Reyes’ vehicle veered to the left across traffic lanes and then overturned. The rig then slammed into the center divider. Police say that Reyes’ wasn’t properly buckled and was fully ejected from his big rig.
The truck lost about 50 gallons of fuel and spilled oil that washed in to a storm drain after the crash. The big rig ended up partially blocking Metro Gold Line Tracks. As a result of the tragic, fatal accident lane closures remained in effect through noon.
According to the spokeswoman for Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (which operates Gold Line), The Truck was blocking part of the track and then debris blocked the rest of it. Shuttle buses replaced the train. The train was back in service around 11:30 a.m.
Oscar Reyes was killed just hours after a fatal crash near the 210 tunnel. The accident involved three big rigs and three passenger vehicles as well. Police officers say that two of the big rigs were overturned.
Officials report that the Volvo tractor- trailer was traveling eastbound but for unknown reasons the big rig left the road and struck a concrete-crossing pillar. The driver had suffered blunt force trauma to his head and chest due to the wreck. They do not know if he was wearing a seat belt but the poor man died on scene.
A tractor-trailer had jack-knifed into the crash and blocked all of the eastbound lanes on 210 Freeway transition road. Five other vehicles (two big rigs and three cars) accidentally struck the overturned big rig. None of those drivers were seriously injured though.
A 30-year-old Riverside man driving a Nissan Altima and a 38-year-old Fresno man who was driving one of the trucks complained of pain but were not hospitalized
The third truck diver was a 42 year old Riverside man and he, thankfully was not injured. Both crashes are being investigated. On the day of the tragic accident a Sig Alert was issued for the tunnel while autorhities worked to clear the wreckage.
