48 Year Old Newark Man Killed By Earth Mover

A 48 year old man was killed at a Mare Island Construction site Friday afternoon by a large Earth Mover. The man’s name will not be released until his family has been notified.  The Vallejo Police say that the man who died was part of a surveying team which was sharing the site with the workers who were grading it to be eventually a construction for three homes.

A U.S. Forest Service employee was nearby the construction site and said that he noticed that the man who is now dead, was in what he considered a dangerous situation when he walked by during a break.

The Forest Service Man’s report said:

A little while ago, about 12:45, I saw these guys out surveying and those huge machines were driving around them. It looked unsafe to me. I was afraid something would happen, and I hadn’t walked about a mile further when I heard the sirens."

The man did not want to give his name but according to the police the mans fears were justified. Lt. Robinson said that One man was working with a surveyor (equipment) and the other had the stick they use as a marker. Then a big CAT scraper came around and he started to make the turn, he didnt see the person with the marker, and struck him which ended him killing the man. He turned around noticed someone lying on the ground, jumped down to check on him and called for an ambulance.

The call went out just before 1 o clock p.m. Cal OSHA, which is the state industrial safety oversight agency, and the county corner’s office were contacted about the accident.  None of the other workers or men on the site was willing to speak with the media.
