Officer Hit by Vehicle, Police Search for Suspect

Officer Hit by Vehicle In Granada Hills

On Thursday, a Los Angeles police officer had been hit by a vehicle in the Granada Hills area. The officer had to be taken to the hospital in an ambulance which prompted a three hour manhunt for the driver who had fled on foot from the scene.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the incident happened in the 10900 block of Haskell Avenue around noon.  According to LAPD Officer Jane Kim, it started when a narcotics officer was reported down and then there was an active search in the area for a “suspect”. Officer Kim was able to clarify later, that the officer had been struck by a vehicle.

LAPD Lt. Andrew Neiman’s Statement:

The suspect actually crashed up onto the sidewalk and into a wrought-iron fence. The driver was arrested and the search was concluded.

No other details were immediately given.  An aerial video from the crash site showed the officer being treated by the paramedics. They were on a side walk in a residential area. You could also see a maroon Chevy Tahoe crashed into a hedge just a few feet away. There was also a white pickup truck, parked not far away.

According to Officer Kim, the injured Officer had a major compound fracture. She also believed that the fracture was in the hip or femur area.

LAPD Officers Come to Crash Scene

The officer had to be lifted out on a gurney. Then wheeled into a Fire Department ambulance. There were at least seven LAPD patrol cars on the scene. The officer was reportedly in “serious but stable condition”.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck’s Statement:

He is going into surgery. His spirits are good. His family is with him.

LAPD Officer Liliana Preciado described the driver who fled as a “chubby-looking” black man who is around five foot, six inches tall. Possibly weighing between one hundred and eighty pounds to two hundred pounds. He also had short Afro haircut. The man was last seen wearing blue jeans and a maroon shirt.

The suspect is wanted for assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer. Police set up a search perimeter. Armed officers and K-9’s were surrounding a home just four miles from the crash scene. A K-9 officer was finally able to track down the suspect. He was found in a backyard on San Fernando Road and Haskell Avenue.
