  • A Railroad Crossing in an Urban Environment

A railroad crossing in an urban environment presents a serious danger to pedestrians and vehicles alike. Often, there are no physical barriers present and the only protection a pedestrian has are signs and his own sense of danger. Though the danger of poorly marked railroad crossings receives some public attention, railroads must assume that the public is aware of the danger and will act accordingly. This does not, however, relieve them of the responsibility of using the most effective means for minimizing the danger to the general public.

If these means fail or prove ineffective, a person on the sidewalk or crossing the tracks may not see or hear the oncoming train, and a fatal accident becomes inevitable.

A Railroad Crossing Just Blocks From His Home

Railroads tend to pay more attention to vehicular traffic with flashing lights and barriers. They have attempted to enforce the notion that no pedestrian should ever be found near railroad tracks, however, by necessity, pedestrians must on occasion cross the tracks.

A 15-year-old high school freshman was killed blocks from his home when he was hit by a freight train as he and a 17-year-old boy were trying to cross railroad tracks in Indiana.

The two boys were headed north on Delaware Street and tried to cross the tracks in front of an eastbound train, according to reports. The 17-year-old made it across but the younger boy was hit.

The student was struck in the late afternoon hours according to the coroner’s office. He was taken to a local hospital’s emergency room, where he was pronounced dead later that day.

A spokeswoman for the high school was not immediately available.
