Another truck crash, another tragic accident. There is at least one person dead after, what the CHP are calling a “tragic accident”. The crash happened along Interstate 5 in Fresno County. Four other people were injured in the crash.
CHP Lt. Jason Elsome’s Statemet:
There was one vehicle that did not stop. It was a big rig driver, did not stop for unknown reasons we’re investigating at this time, and crashed into the back of some of those vehicles.
According to the reports, there was a white pickup truck that unfortunately that took the biggest blow. The driver of the truck was just an eighteen year old young man. He sadly died at the scene. The passenger in the truck with him had suffered from major injures and had to be life-fligthed to a hospital.
Lt. Elsome just happens to be the commander of the CHP Coaling area. He said that out of the five vehicles involved, the Fed Ex big rig was the only vehicle that was in motion. The other vehicles were already stopped.
Lt. Elsome’s Statement:
This time, what we know is that there was some roadwork being done– there was a closure that was in effect north of this location approximately a mile and a quarter. There was cones tapering off and signage out there that indicated that the roadway was closed.
The I-5 had to be closed for around 2 hours in both directions. There were some downed power lines on the freeway after a storm and the PG&E were repairing the lines.
Elsome said that this is still under investigation, however the CHP doesn’t think that weather was a factor in this incident. They also do not believe that the driver of the FedEx vehicle was drinking or under the influence.
