When an estimated 1.7 million Americans suffer traumatic brain injuries each year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has called them an invisible epidemic. A great many of these injuries involve children and sports activities. Three quarters of all injuries are concussions. And it now appears that even a single concussion can cause lasting damage to the brain in some people.

According to the CDC, almost 500,000 emergency room visits for traumatic brain injuries each year are made by children under the age of 14. And each year, emergency rooms nationwide treat nearly 175,000 sports-related traumatic brain injuries among children under the age of 19. Unlike other injuries, such as broken bones, the symptoms of brain injury are not always immediately identifiable.

Another study by an group of Ohio physicians show that emergency room visits by children for sports-related traumatic brain injuries, such as concussions, has nearly doubled in the last 10 years. Between 2002 and 2011, the number of children making trips to emergency rooms for brain injuries increased by 92 percent. During the same time, the number of those admitted to the hospital for further observation or treatment also increased by about 10 percent.

If your child has experienced in sports injury accident and suffered a head trauma — such as severe concussion or brain damage — you may be entitled to compensation under the law for damages like medical costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
